Big restoration! This is how it looked when I got it. eBay find
Specs:
HP NetServer E60
HP 256W power supply
2xIntel Pentium III 500MHz Slot 1 processors
512MB PC100 RAM
GoTek floppy emulator (original floppy drive was busted)
Hitachi CDR-8435 32X IDE CD-ROM drive
HP branded Fujitsu 9.1GB 7200RPM 68-pin SCSI hard drive
Quantum Atlas 10K2 36GB 10,000 RPM 68-pin SCSI hard drive
Windows NT4 Server
Windows 2000 Pro
ATI XPert 2000 Pro 32MB AGP video card
Turtle Beach Montego II AU8830 A3D PCI sound card
Onboard HP NetServer LAN
Onboard HP branded Adaptec AIC-7895 SCSI adapter
The insides when I first plopped it open. Surprisingly clean
dat CPU blank
Pretty cool card on the side of the case
Came with a 4MB ATI Rage IIC AGP video card
Also came with this 9.1GB 7200RPM SCSI hard drive
The side panel needed a LOT of work.... this is after initial cleaning with magic eraser and isopropyl alcohol
Just to give an idea...
Figured why not use car cleaning products...
Significant improvement
Ah, the joy of a magic eraser
The big 10,000RPM hard drive... check out how it sounds here !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
The ATI Xpert 2000 Pro 32MB AGP video card
Turtle Beach Montego II AU8830 A3D PCI sound card from some old Dell... the machine did not come equipped with a sound card
All cleaned up! That SCSI cable is really long. Tucked the terminator below the optical drive.
Friend sent me a matching processor. Also replaced the loud rear fan with an Arctic F9 92mm fan... and replaced the super loud power supply fan with some generic spare one I had lying around. Fans are much much quieter. The SCSI hard drives, however...
Vent cover on
Power supply sticker... proprietary
The front! All ret 2 go
The rear, complete with original keys + zip tie
Side A
Side B
Boot screen
GoTek at work!
Boots to an MS-DOS floppy just fine
Windows NT4 booting up
NT4 desktop
NT4 programs + info
2000 desktop
2000 programs + info
Specs via AIDA32
Ran CrystalDiskMark on the 9.1GB HD
Ran CrystalDiskMark on the 36GB HD
Updating Windows 2000 in 2020... that tape drive didn’t actually work so I removed it.
Where it resides, next to my trusty Dell Precision 5810 which you can see here

ah the days of installing Windows NT, where not hitting “F6" in time would get you the “INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE” BSoD. And NT blue screens used to be so full of life... death.

Ah, the days of 68 pin SCSI. I remember them well. You need a good 15k rpm drive to really live the life!

Pentium 3 what a powerhouse.
May I ask the why?

yeah it was a wonderful experience to install NT4 on that without a working floppy drive ... ended up copying the NT4 i386 directory to the HD and replacing the AIC78xx.sys with the HP provided one

What is your motivation for doing this? Also, out of curiosity, suppose I had a spare GPU lying about. Say, a 1060 or a GTX580. Big ones. If I wanted to fold with it, shutting down the CPU slot because noisy and inefficient, what would be the bare minimum box I might use for that purpose? An older Precision tower, perhaps? If you had a minute, would you scare me up an appropriate eBay example? No solid plans, but depending on how things go with getting BUTTFACE on eBay to take back that rusty card he sent me... I’m working with the Visa credit card people on that right now...
Also, I will mail you a TEAM OPPOSITELOCK sticker unless it’s the case that you truly do not want one.

I think I’d be out $80, drunk, and wondering why the hell I thought I could make a Pentium 3 PC work again.

I had those, too! SC, Diablo, Warcraft 2, all classics.
Add Half-Life to that list, too. What a ride that was.

it’s a pretty rare machine now... not too many dual Pentium rigs runnign aorund these days
it’ll be used for older games, MIDI, and for hooking up any old devices i encounter like printers or gamepads

Back in those days the company I worked for had tower servers with RAID setups with those 15k drives. I was so happy when I got an office without those things in there.

You would have loved all of the old IBM Netfinity 3000 servers they had when I started there. They were still in the storage room when I left, 12 years later.

So with the CPU folding slot closed anyway, what minimum CPU would you run just to keep the GPU folding?

I was always partial to the big squares we had at Hughes Aircraft back in the ‘90s. I always wanted to find one of these and do a modern build in the case.
